Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas - Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona

CSIC-CNM logo The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) is the largest public institution dedicated to research in Spain and the third largest in Europe. Its main objective is to develop and promote research that will help bring about scientific and technological progress, and it is prepared to collaborate with Spanish and foreign entities in order to achieve this aim. Its mission is to foster, coordinate, perform scientific and technological research, of a multidisciplinary nature, in order to contribute to advancing knowledge and economic, social and cultural development, as well as to train staff and advise public and private entities on this matter. It has a staff of more than 13,000 employees, among these about 3,300 are permanent researchers and about 4,300 are pre- and post-doctoral researchers. The CSIC has 70 fully own institutes or centres distributed throughout Spain and 53 Joint Research Units with universities or other research institutions. The Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona (IMB-CNM) is the largest centre of Spain devoted to micro/nano technologies. The main activity of IMB-CNM is basic and applied research and development in micro- and nano-electronics based in silicon technology. Its mission is to improve the knowledge in these fields and to contribute to the implementation of solutions based in these technologies in industrial products. IMB-CNM was established in 1985 and has a staff of about 200 persons. The integrated micro- and nano-fabrication clean room of IMB-CNM is one of the large-scale scientific and technological facilities (ICTS) in Spain, and it was supported by the EC access to research infrastructures programme from 2000 to 2003. It includes a full CMOS line for integrated circuit fabrication and integrated facilities for silicon micromachining and nanofabrication. Since about 20 years ago, IMB-CNM has been continuously participating in 15-20 projects of the European Framework Programmes or Joint Technology Initiatives.
